Holiday Return Policy Checklist: 8 Things to Read Before Buying

Check return deadlines, final-sale terms, refund methods, shipping costs, receipts, opened-item rules, restocking fees, and marketplace sellers.

Before buying a holiday gift, check the last return date, refund method, final-sale exclusions, opened-item rules, return shipping, restocking fees, receipt requirements, and the identity of the seller. Save the policy that applied on the purchase date because seasonal terms can differ from the store's usual window.

The Federal Trade Commission recommends reviewing refund policies, return shipping, other charges, and possible restocking fees before buying from an unfamiliar seller. Its holiday shopping advice also suggests searching the seller's name with words such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam.”

1. What is the exact deadline?

Look for a calendar date, not “extended holiday returns.” Determine whether the deadline is based on purchase, delivery, shipment back, or receipt by the warehouse.

If a gift will be opened weeks after purchase, count the remaining days. A generous-sounding 30-day window may end before the recipient opens the package.

2. Is the item final sale?

Clearance, personalized products, food, intimate goods, event tickets, and digital items may have special rules. “No returns” may appear near the price, in the cart, or within a policy page.

Do not assume a gift can be returned because a similar item was accepted last year. Save a screenshot or PDF of the item page and policy for expensive or uncertain purchases.

3. How will the refund be issued?

A store may refund the original payment method, provide store credit, or issue a gift card. Gift returns without a receipt may use the lowest recent sale price or require identification, depending on policy and local law.

If the recipient will handle the return, ask whether a gift receipt is available and whether it reveals the price. For a gift card versus physical gift, compare flexibility with fees, expiration rules, and the recipient's likely use.

4. Who pays return shipping?

Free delivery does not imply free returns. Check label fees, drop-off options, packaging requirements, and whether original shipping is refundable.

For a bulky or fragile gift, estimate the return burden before buying. A lower online price can lose its advantage when the recipient must ship a large box at their expense.

5. Are opened products accepted?

Electronics, beauty products, mattresses, appliances, and collectibles may have shorter windows or condition requirements. Check rules for removed tags, activated devices, assembled furniture, and damaged packaging.

Do not open or register an item “to make sure it works” without understanding how that affects the recipient's return rights. When testing is necessary, keep every insert and piece of packaging until the decision is final.

6. Is there a restocking or pickup fee?

A percentage fee can erase a discount. Large items may also carry pickup or disassembly charges. Calculate the possible amount in dollars.

If the fee seems unclear, ask the merchant through an official contact channel and save the reply. Do not rely on a marketplace question answered by an unidentified customer.

7. Who is the actual seller?

Marketplaces can host multiple sellers with different policies. Find the “sold by” and “fulfilled by” details, then open that seller's return terms. Confirm where customer service and returns are handled.

Our guide to avoiding holiday shopping scams explains how to inspect unfamiliar stores and delivery messages before sharing payment information.

8. What proof should you keep?

Save the order confirmation, item description, policy, delivery record, serial number when relevant, and return tracking. Keep gift receipts with the item and note the deadline on a calendar.

Record the full committed price in your holiday budget. Do not count a return as available money until the refund appears.

A return policy is part of the product. Read it with the same care as size, color, and price. Ten minutes before checkout can prevent the recipient from being trapped with an unsuitable gift or an expensive shipping problem.
